Ways to take the next step towards sustainable packaging
How can companies navigate the sea of craziness when it comes to understanding sustainable packaging? Here are a few quick steps to get started!
Reduce - the easiest way to make an impact on your carbon footprint along with your profitability is to reduce the amount of packaging or the amount of material in your packaging. There’s a TON of over packed items in the market today and most of it is in stock sized box shipping
Reuse - This idea of reuse is tough and takes time, but creating a package that is reusable for your customers is a great way to generate brand loyalty and repeat business. Working with items like glass, PET, steel, aluminum, and HDPE are also a bonus if you can get reusability from them and then they can be recycled at the end of life
Recycle - Admit it, you have the song in your head now! Once you’ve exhausted all of the above options, look into ways you can incorporate post consumer recycled content into your packaging AND make it from curbside recyclable materials (mentioned above and try to stay with #1 or #2 plastics along with most paper based packaging)
There’s so much more that goes into sustainable packaging, but this should be a very helpful place to start on your journey or continue on it
